Bawden wallpapers at the Higgins Bedford

Join us for a special behind the scenes session with Curator Victoria Partridge, looking at Bawden wallpapers from the store.

Throughout his extensive career in print, design and illustration Bawden also produced some intriguing wallpapers. In 1927, as a student, he first experimented with wallpaper production in his London bedsit, stamping each cow of ‘Tree and Cow’ onto the paper with his foot. Harold Curwen at the Curwen Press turned the design into a lithograph and began small commercial production of the work at a time when wallpaper was firmly out of fashion. In the late 1930’s Edward Bawden alongside his friend, and neighbour, John Aldridge produced a series called The Bardfield Wallpapers and these were taken up by Coles. The artists received only meagre earnings from the enterprise but the papers were critically well received with Periwinkle being used in the 1951 Festival of Britain.

Victoria will let us get close up to the ‘enchantingly personal and offbeat’ wallpaper designs from the museum store.
