Houses of Parliament- WHS Special Visit @ Houses of Parliament | England | United Kingdom

Members of the Wallpaper History Society and their friends are invited to join a special visit to the Houses of Parliament. One of the most recognised buildings in the world, the Palace of Westminster ( or the Houses of Parliament as it is commonly known) owes its stunning Gothic architecture to the 19th-century architect Sir Charles Barry. Now Grade 1 listed, and part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Palace contains a fasinating mixture of both ancient and modern buildings, and houses an exemplary collection of archives, works of art and furnishings including wallpaper.

The visit will include a tour around the most iconic areas of the Palace and then will concentrate on the Lords end that has more examples of wallpaper. Estate Archivist & Historian, Dr Mark Collins will discuss fragments of original 1850s papers with the group along with hand-blocked reproductions from the 1960s through to 2006 by Cole & Sons using original blocks, and more recently Allyson McDermott from 2013 and 2014 using new blocks. The visit will include a visit to the Committee Rooms as wellas the Pugin room, which is where the latest Allyson McDermott paper is hanging.
