Visit to Private Historic Wallpaper Archive @ The Cavendish Hall | Thurston | England | United Kingdom

Join us for an exclusive visit to the historic wallpaper archive of Philip Aitken, architect and Historic Building Consultant in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. Philip has spent many years working in the historic built environment, including assisting English Heritage with their recognition of Listed Building status for several houses.

In the course of his work he has been involved in the conservation planning, recording and analysis of thousands of historic buildings in East Anglia, ranging from farmhouses and follies to townhouses across the social spectrum. In many of these properties, Philip has discovered the rare survival of historic wallpapers and has carefully salvaged examples where they would otherwise have ended up in the builders skip. He has now amassed a collection of around 700 wallpaper samples from East Anglian houses, with a main focus on wallpapers from the 18th and early19th centuries, and he has kindly offered the Wallpaper History Society the opportunity to explore his collection.

Philip will be on hand to informally explain the background behind the finding, analysis and dating of several of his papers which will be on display at The Cavendish Hall, Thurston on 11th March from 10am until 2pm. All are welcome to come along for a rare opportunity to explore this fascinating archive and hear how historic wallpapers can help us further understand the history and changing uses of buildings in the past.

The WHS is unable to provide lunch, however tea and coffee will be available.

Tickets: £16.00 members / £19.00 non-members.
