Wallpaper History Society AGM & Christmas Lecture 2022

We are delighted to welcome Catherine Sidwell as our speaker at this year's Wallpaper History Society AGM. Catherine's talk will focus on C.F.A. Voysey’s frequent depiction of birds in his wallpaper designs and why he chose to do so.

Catherine Sidwell is a Design Historian who trained as a curator, exhibitions and projects manager in local history museums, at the V&A, Powerhouse Museum, Sydney, and British Museum. One of her early exhibition projects in 1990 at the Museum of Richmond, Surrey, was a collaboration with Hamilton and Weston Wallpapers for Layers of History: Uncovering Period Wallpapers, their history and development 1509-1840.

Catherine’s interests in British Arts and Crafts and a fascination with historic pattern design for wallpapers and textiles led to her studying a PhD at Kingston University as part of the Modern Interiors Research Centre. Her thesis is entitled Representations of birds in culture, society, and decorative designs for the domestic interior 1851-1914, with special reference to the work of C.F.A. Voysey. Earlier this year, Catherine joined Sanderson Design Group as Archivist.
